How to Beat Pressure

I hope you are enjoying your holidays but remember that we are going to work hard again starting tomorrow. Check out the following website: http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/drills/backupdribbledrill.html

Post a comment on how anything from that website could help you to beat pressure. We will be working on ball handling more in the next few weeks as I feel it is a weakness we have.

Just as a FYI: expect individual workouts tomorrow. Meaning, I will be working with one or two players at a time and we will talk about things that I believe you could work on. Therefore, I will be expecting that the other girls are working hard and following the directions that I give them. This is where trust is really important and leaders are easy to see.

Game Last Night and Tomorrow

Happy Snow Day Girls,

A few things about last nights game since we did not have the opportunity to talk. Although things did not always go right, I was happy with how hard you girls played and how you went after the ball.

Positives:

Getting loose balls: I can not recall a time where they got one towards the end of the game
Executing plays at dead balls/timeouts: it is important to be able to run new plays when the opportunities present themselves and we did that pretty well
2nd half toughness: you did a great job of not complaining about the officiating and not letting them get in your head by being physical

Negatives:

Sloppy offense: you need to recognize when they overplay you to go back door
Too many turnovers: it is really important we get shots almost every possession
Post entry passes and decisions: the posts needed to work harder to get open and the post passers needed to make the correct decision in terms of when to make the pass (baseline bounce passes work the best)

Tomorrows Game

Tomorrow we play at home vs. Hortonville. Be ready in the locker room by 5:15.

The scouting report on Hortonville is that they run basically the same set up that we do. Expect them to play pack line defense, possibly press a little and run a basic offense. Take a look at your binder to make sure we are ready to go.

Press Adjustment:

I really wish we had practice today so we could go over this change. However, this is the best option we have available. If Hortonville goes 4-up press breaker vs us, we are going to change how we press them. I am going to use the starting lineup and their numbers as examples as I explain how it will work.

We will have our 5 (Heather), run back to the free throw line defending the basket. Her responsibility is to make them take a jump shot or make as many passes as possible if they break our press so the defense can get back. The 4 (Emily S.) will be at half court, she will be like a safety in football. She has to read the offense and try to trap or intercept passes when the opportunities come up. The guards are set up based on what the offense does. The only for sure to be guarded from the offense are on the ball out of bounds and that the other two guards are defended. We want the other team to give the ball to a post player and then we trap them. We will use this press defense unless we are in foul trouble. The reason for that is because there might be times when we pick up aggressive fouls.
I am attempting to use a computer program to show this. So since I am learning it as I am typing this, I am hoping I can get it to work. As you can see on the left, the 4 has the freedom to look for steals. I would rather she shade a little more towards the open guard so that the only open girl is another post player. (we could possibly trap again depending on the situation)

Your job is to comment on this: Any questions about this or anything else. Between shoveling and doing homework, I will be on my computer checking to see what we have come up with.

P.S. We are the triangles...

Post Moves

As promised, here is a good link to post moves (with videos).

http://www.coachesclipboard.net/PostMoves.html

In the drills, I noticed that everyone tried to do the move to the lane even when that was not what the defense was allowing.

Post a comment explaining when to do each of the 3 moves we talked about at Wednesday's practice.

Remember, all of you need to be able to post up well this season.

Saturday Practice

Before the scrimmage on Monday, please review the press handouts. We will use them both in the game.

Get your rest and be safe if you are hunting,

Welcome!

Welcome to the blog we will be using this season to help improve our knowledge of basketball. Check back often for activities that you will have to do.

Note: This is not like facebook or myspace so please do not treat it that way.
